Task

Jussi wanted a brand identity that acknowledged his Finnish heritage, and therefore named his company ‘Lumi’ which is Finnish for “snow.” He wanted a corporate identity and that expressed professionalism, precision, stability, trustworthiness and all other attributes you look for in a patent attorney. As they operate internationally, the identity should also speak to a global audience in many different industries.

Approach

We found ‘snow’ to be an appropriate symbol for work that requires a cool, clear, and uncluttered mind. This became the foundation for the visual identity. Also, the Nordic cultures are often associated with precision and stability – vital aspects of the brand identity.

Outcome

A bold, yet graceful, visual identity. The combining of the ‘u’ and the ‘m’ creates a subtle movement, since the patent attorney’s job is to get their clients over a hurdle. The ‘IP’ is framed by a circle to connote the essential protective aspect of the work. The combination of dark and bright blue is a nod to contemporary Nordic graphic design. Taking the snow symbolism further, the business card design is a detail derived from James E. Sears Ice manufacturing device patent application drawing from 1871.
