Exhibition Catalogue Layout & Design / Graphic Design
art+château is a not-for-profit based in Bern, Switzerland working with both emerging and established artists from around the world to present contemporary art in historic settings.

Task
The assignment was to create a bilingual exhibition catalogue for art+château’s contemporary art exhibition at the Baroque Schloss Waldegg, the overall layout followed the previous exhibition catalogue. Read more
Approach
For the previous exhibition catalgue, we had a limited amount of pages to work with and fit in a significant amount of content. This year, the number of pages per artist increased, and we had additional pages available for title and division pages. Therefore additional layout designs were necessary. Each year, the cover design consists of a grayscale image of the location, but the typography and colour choices are entirely free to reflect the current theme. This year, the focus was on modern interpretations of Baroque art, and we wanted to pair a classic Baroque font with a modern, ornate, and showy typeface.
Outcome
The cover design is a monochrome photograph of the Baroque Waldegg castle with a Baroque script font, combined with an over-the-top, lush contemporary typeface, with colours inspired by a particular wallpaper that appears in the catalogue. A design that muses on the concept of Baroque in a contemporary context. The cover typography design is repeated on the title page and the artist division page, and the colours are carried through the catalogue as quote font colours and background colours.
